Six Sigma is a business management strategy and is a proven disciplined approach for improving measurable results for any organization. Six Sigma project success stories exist from organizations including manufacturing, service, nonprofit, government, research and health care.

Lean Six Sigma goes by many names, including Lean Enterprise, lean manufacturing, Lean Sigma, and Lean Service. These concepts are a natural complement to Six Sigma and can be applied to every type of business and process. The common thread is to identify and eliminate sources of waste and activities that do not add value, in order to create flow with maximum productivity, capacity, and throughput.

Martin Czebotar is the owner of ZEB connsulting LLC and is a Six Sigma Black Belt. His expertise is in designing production processes and optimizing the work process through Six Sigma techniques, project management, product design, production capabilities and team communications.

Risk Language and Getting Specific

Many people claim to manage their risks, but in many instances, they don't even know how to speak the language properly. In this compelling workshop, Carl Pritchard (Lead Chapter Author, Risk Management, PMBOK, 4th Edition) discusses the importance of creating a risk language that others can understand and live with. Carl examines the challenges in both identifying risk events and clarifying how to talk about which risks are truly worthy of our concern. He applies his light-hearted comedic style to a topic that often seems weighty and depressing and gives you the ability to engage in healthier and clearer risk conversations with your teams and management.

PMLL Episode 0039 Teaching Old Dogs to do New Tricks? A Primer on Change (PMlessonsLearned.com PM Best Practices Group)

These are the notes from the PMlessonLearned.com Conference Call:

Topic: PM Lessons Learned
Presentation Topic: "Teaching Old Dogs to do New Tricks? A Primer on Change"
Host: Henry Will, PMP
Presenter: Author and Speaker Peter De Jager
Date: 26Jun2008
Podcast number: 0039
MP3 / Podcast: Download MP3 or Listen on Internet Archive or Listen on OurMedia or Join our podcast on itunes

You may want to listen to the MP3s of past conference calls. They're located in our Archive (see the link on our website).

Notes from the call:

The online presentation is located here:
http://www.technobility.com/docs//cmpresentation.htm
  1. Change is not an event, it is a process that takes time and has distinct stages.
  2. A certain amount of 'resistance to Change' is crucial to ANY organization. There is far too much Change possible for us to embrace every Change available. And, organizations MUST foster an environment that permits rational resistance to Change, in order to intelligently select the most appropriate Changes available.
  3. People do not really 'resist' Change, they resist being changed and they resist uncertainty. The goal of management is to entice people to Change when appropriate, AND to plan the Change as effectively as possible to minimize the uncertainty.
  4. If people are 'resisting' Change, it is because they do not believe it is necessary. In other words, not enough of the right form of communication has taken place.
  5. The overriding importance and value of clear, constant, honest communications.

Notes from the call:

Everyone’s Trying to Make a Buck

Contract Recruiters: Relationship Builders VS Permanent Recruiters: Job Finders

Various Industry Recruiters

IT Recruiters

Recruiters that like to meet with you verse recruiters that don’t

Build the relationship; more about being consultant intimate

Getting to know the real YOU as a candidate

Take candidates out for lunch/coffee

Build a strong relationship – when you are comfortable telling your recruiter about friends that are looking because you know he/she has YOUR best interest at heart and will continue looking for opportunities for you even though you’ve referred a friend with better skills. Feel free to give them names of managers that you know at companies in order to have their trained account manager call to setup meetings and establish contact. THIS way, we can hopefully uncover some needs that they didn’t know were there, or can get your foot back in the door to a place where you already have contacts or possibly have even worked before.

Recruiters that aren’t interested in building the relationship are interested in what we call speed to market. Hopefully can send over a few resumes and see if they stick – first phone call should be to try and setup a meeting and if not, you will know that the person is just out to fill the position and doesn’t care to establish a long term relationship with the consultant; easier for permanent recruiters to do this, not to their own fault, but that is how they will make their $$$.
In the same respect that the recruiters want to meet with you, their account managers are meeting with the clients and getting to know the real need for the client to build the relationship on that end so they are not disappointed when they get a few resumes that certain recruiters would just like to “stick.” Helps our hiring managers have confidence in us.

Built up a relationship with consultant I knew I couldn’t place but we were up front with her about this issue and we still continued the relationship hoping she’d come down a bit on rate meanwhile she continues giving us referrals upon referrals of people, and we met with one and put him to work right away.

In order to “get the most from your recruiter” continue contacting this person on a weekly basis as will the recruiter and be “in their face.” They will think of your first if they are always on your mind.

Find the right recruiters by searching for job postings and contacting the recruiters directly. Google staffing firms find some of the largest, most reputable

“How to be an effective Virtual Project Manager?”

A Project Manager needs to understand many aspects of project management to be effective, but three key elements are e-mail, conference calls and phone calls.

The Project Manager needs strong skills using all three of these communication methods to be an effective Virtual Project Manager.

The e-mail send to your team should be short and specific items/questions sent to your virtual team member. The e-mail should not contain complex wording or be confusing for the reader. A Project Manager must remember that a virtual team member reading e-mail will not have opportunity to ask questions or listen to the emphasis of the request as a person would give working in the same office would.

Another strong communication skill needed by the Virtual Project Manager is the ability to lead conference calls. This is a skill learned by much practice and much listening on the part of the virtual Project Manager. It is important to remember that the purpose of the conference call is not for the team to hear the Project Manager’s voice talk over and over about the project topics, but to get the teams input in key areas/topics that need to be covered in a group forum.

Finally, phone calls to the virtual team members must be kept short and to the point. Again, the virtual team members have a day full of meetings and tasks and a half-hour call from the virtual Project Manager two or three times a day, will make the team member ineffective.

In summary, the Virtual Project Manager needs to have many skills to be effective to manage his/her team. Key communication skills needed by these Virtual Project Managers are strong skills with e-mail, conference calls and individual phone calls. Only with a strong understanding of these communication skills can a project manager be an effective Virtual Project Manager.

PMLL Episode 0031 Project Management is a Dead-End Job. Is There Life After Project Management?

This is the MP3 Podcast of the PMlessonLearned.com PM Best Practices presentation topic of "Project Management is a Dead-End Job. Is There Life After Project Management?" as presented by Steve Blais, PMP on 20Mar2008.

Steve Blais, PMP shared with us some of the many options available to Project Managers for the "next step" in their careers.

Steve Blais is the founder of Parkson International and PM since 1969

Download or Listen to the MP3 of PMLessonsLearned.com Episode 0031
(if your computer doesn't support that link, then this Internet Archive link or this OurMedia link may work)

Notes are below, but first this...

A Project Management Cruise - vacation with other PMLL members and learn PM info at the same time! We're traveling with the New Jersey PMI Chapter - May 17, 2008 - New Jersey to Bermuda on RCL (http://pminj.org/08-sea/085smp.htm). Deadline for registration: 2/29/2008

PM Best Practice Session:

Where can we move from Project Management? Is it really a dead end job?

Steve referred to the book "What Color is Your Parachute" (see links below)

Steve also mentioned about Alpha Project Managers - the Alpha's love what they do - they're successful! (see links below)

Well, as PMs, we can move: Up, Over, or Out.

Here are some of the options that Steve discussed with us:

* Process management - keep with the product your project produced
* Business Manager - start or join a company
* Move into the aspect of Project Management you like (customer interaction, administrative)
* Business Analyst
* If you love doing Project Management, then you can stay as a PM - there's options there too:
* You can move up as a PM doing Portfolio Management or working as a Program Manager in a PMO
* You can move out: you can work as a contract Project Manager. You can travel and get into places you might not get otherwise (you may also be restricted from some assignments)
* You can move over: teaching, training, and other options

After the call recording was stopped we talked with someone who asked about how to find a specific type of project management. She was referred to a few members of the group, the local PMI chapter (see pmi.org for links to the local chapters) and the various SIGs (Special Interest Groups) that exist in a myriad of specialties including IT, Marketing, Pharmaceutical, PMO, etc. (see pmi.org for information on SIGs). Another person who was in transition asked about how to continue to learn.
