The Most Listened to recording!
We just had a panel discussion on Non-IT Project Management on Aug. 20, 2009. This call has the distinction of being the most highly attended live call ever.
If you missed it, as with all of our calls, you can still listen to the recording via telephone until our next recorded call.
The number to dial to listen to the last recorded call changes from time to time and is always posted on the left side of our website at PMlessonsLearned.com Currently, the phone number is:
Listen to last confcall recording: (269) 320-8399 Access Code: 767 616#
You can also listen to past calls using your computer or MP3 player by clicking on the "Archive of Past Call Audio" link on the left side of the www.pmlessonslearned.com website (or by using the link to subscribe via itunes). Our volunteer team is still getting caught up on posting the recordings (we experienced some set backs), but we should be close to catching up in a few weeks.

* Does your industry subscribe to the PMI PMBOK description of Project Management or are there other standards
* Do executives in your industry support PMP certification or not? Why? What is their reasoning?
* Do you feel that the PMBOK applies to your industry?
* Can you explain the most important aspects of PM to your industry?
* What are the PM methodologies applied in your industry?
* Why do you think that PMI seems to be overrun by IT people? -- It did not start out that way.
* Do non-IT project managers get the same disrespect from executives as the IT project managers?
* Are Non-IT Project managers usually asked to do other jobs/roles besides just the PM role?
* Are non-IT PMs usually told that PM practices are not valuable (as is often the case in IT Project Management)?
* Do you know of any executives in your industry that rose to their current positions via a Project Management career path?
* What is the career path for PMs in your industry? I.e. how do they get to be PMs and what careers are there after being PMs?

Our first call was May 18, 2006. More than 3years ago.We have members from around the globe (see our testimonial link on the website: pmlessonslearned.com)
We mentioned our vision (it's on the website and has been our vision from the beginning):
The goal of this group is to Empower Project Managers, and people studying for the PMP test.
* Increase PM Knowledge
* Build Business Relationships
* Increase your effectiveness
* Increase your marketability
* Gain Professional Support
We talked about how you can brand yourself and market yourself as a PM (and gain PM experience) by volunteering with the group.
Scott shared about the PMJOBSHOP group - volunteers needed to network with recruiters.
Barbara Fuller - talked about needing volunteer(s) to get a list of top 10 PM recruiters.
Dana shared about the monthly PMP Exam Study Group - volunteers needed to present
New Virtual PMP Study group: Joe chimed in later on this - volunteers needed to help coordinate and present
2. New ideas:
Thoughts about a PM competition - any interest from members to volunteer to lead this?
Steve Blais shared the vision for a Mentoring program and a LessonsLearned repository - volunteers needed.
3. Volunteer ops:
* We Could use someone to lead the volunteer coordination: recruit, recognize, organize volunteers. Start a list of "micro-tasks" that volunteers could help with.
* We could use someone to work with recruiters and build relationships there
* We could use someone to work with speakers and authors to put "PM Best practices tips" and "PM Career tips" in yahoo emails
We recognized a bunch of our volunteers!
