The PMP examination is based on version 4 of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). This month’s PMP Study call continues the focus on the Project Cost Management Knowledge Area. On September 3, 2009, David Radkovich covered a major Tool & Technique called Earned Value Management. From a cost and schedule point-of-view, those are all the formulas used to determine where your project stands and the requirements for completion. In this session, we will cover the rest of the Project Cost Management knowledge area as laid out in PMBOK version 4. There are changes in this area. Abstract of the Presentation:
This presentation will take you through a real story of building a PMO when projects are already running. In an ideal situation, it would be great to build a PMO "by the book." In an ideal world it would be best to start from scratch and follow the best practices to build a PMO on a solid foundation.

But, in the real world, situations are less than ideal. Perhaps, just like this story, you're building (or about to build) a PMO in an environment where everything is already running full steam ahead. It's like jumping on to a moving train! Things are already in motion. You've got to build a solid foundation while things are moving.

It's like taking control of a war that's already happening. The fighter jets are already scrambling, the tanks are already rolling, sirens are sounding, bullets are flying, and all of the generals have higher priorities in their own battles. What's a new commander to do?

This presentation will be helpful to people trying to raise the effectiveness of a PMO, people considering starting a PMO, and those desiring to better understand PMOs

NOTES FROM THE CALL:

• With Mentoring, go slow before you go fast
• Many people concentrate on ""Who"" to be mentored by before they concentrate on ""What"" to be mentored about. Take the time to plan the ""What"" first. Start with the goal in mind.
• Mentoring is a way to develop, so what are you trying to develop?
• Discuss strategies that are outside your comfort zone to be put into practice before the next meeting. This will push you to grow.
• An important value of mentoring: Mentoring builds relationships which works at the need to build ""purpose at work"" which builds retention of your best people.
• Start with a one year commitment, you can always keep going if it works well. This will set a goal and it isn't too long to commit to.
• Ron suggests that it's best to find someone in your company/organization but from another department. This will help you to learn to navigate your organization.
• Ron recommends that you make an agreement at the start of the mentoring.
• Types of mentoring: one on one or group mentoring. Group mentoring is starting to grow in use. The group presents and issue, brainstorms solutions and then at the meeting the following month they discuss how they handled it.
• It is best to have written goals for mentoring
• What should your mentoring work on? Try to get a 360 degree assessment. If you can't get one at work, then ask people what you should work on.
• Ron said one of the best lessons he learned from his mentor was that he was always bringing his lunch and eating alone, but the mentor told him he should never eat lunch alone. (note: I (Henry) suggest the book ""Never Eat Alone"" by Keith Ferrazzi)
• When asked what the best format is for a meeting with your mentor, Ron suggested: Review the progress of the last meeting's action items and discuss what needs to be done to move forward (discuss next steps and action items) for the next meeting. Ron suggests that mentoring meetings should be once a month and should last about 1 to 1.5 hours.
• Where to find a mentor? Ask at work (ask your manager first), church, and/or other organizations you belong to (PMlessonsLearned.com or your local PMI Chapter for example)

Ron Hadley is Head Talent Management, Novartis Development in East Hanover, NJ and has broad HR experience in Talent Management, Leadership Development, Talent Acquisition, and Business Partnering. Prior positions include Executive Director of Talent Management at Wyeth and Head of US Staffing at BASF Corp.

Ron serves on the Board of Directions for Beyond the Wall, a non-profit serving the needs of the poor in the developing world. He has also provided leadership consulting for a variety of non-profits and taught at Caldwell College.

Ron received his BA in Psychology from the University of Connecticut. In addition, he has an MA in Education from Michigan State University and an MA in HR Management from the University of New Haven.

1,000% over budget. 2 years late. We've all heard about projects where the original budget and schedule were exceeded by orders of magnitude. How could this happen given competent project management? Whether in government or private industry, project managers face a huge challenge when confronted with continually-changing requirements. How can you plan when the WBS keeps changing? Traditional project management approaches suggest that we take a snapshot of the requirements as a baseline, and then use change control in an attempt to minimize the impact of any shifting requirements. Sometimes, however, these changes are a reality that the project sponsor has to accommodate. The new Agile Project Management methods help deal with these situations.
Participants in this session will learn the founding principles and techniques of Agile Project Management with examples from real-world projects that used these methods to control changing requirements.

With over 20 years of managing complex systems integration and software development projects, Kevin Aguanno is known in the industry for his innova­tive approaches to solving common project management problems. He focuses on two project management specialty areas: agile project management and troubled project recovery.
As a well-known keynote speaker, trainer, and coach in agile management meth­ods, Aguanno has taught thousands of people how to better manage high-change projects by using techniques from Scrum, Extreme Programming, Feature-Driven Development, and other agile methods. He is a frequent presenter at conferences and private corporate events where he delights audiences with practical advice peppered with fascinating stories from his own experiences in the trenches practicing agile project management.
He has taught for several years at the University of Toronto where he won the coveted SCS Excellence in Teaching Award, and is a regular guest lecturer in software engineering and project management classes at several other universities.

pmlessonslearned.com is a group of PMs formed to help each other in Project Management.Our audience is made up of novice to accomplished PMs all of which want to learn.These PMs are serious about learning because we don't offer PDUs; We're not a PMI registered education provider.

We're always looking for people to present on our calls!

Our format is an approximately 1 hour call. We have several calls per month:

• 1st Thurdsday of the Month: PMP Exam Study Group
• 2nd Thursday of the month: PM JobShop: Career topics
• 3rd Thursday every month: PM Best Practices / PM Lessons Learned

We have some announcements at the beginning, then the presenter and then Q&A at the end. So, the presentation is usually about 30 to 40 minutes long, but could be longer.

The calls start at 9pm Eastern (because many people have free cell phone use after that hour), but exceptions can be made if you wish to present at another time of day.

We record the call and make it into a podcast that we post on our site and on itunes. Sometimes after we stop the recording, people stay on and talk about the topic or a PM related topic.

We usually only have about a dozen or two dozen participants on the call which makes it very manageable. Depending on the topic, there may be a few hundred listeners to the podcast.

Some speakers provide slides, but that is not necessary. If there are slides, we post them on our website for people to download and follow along.

We use a free conference call service for our conference calls, so long distance charges may apply. Our new conference call provider does allow the use of skype in addition to standard phone service.

You can look at the "archives" on our website to see what some of the subjects are of the presentations we have offered in the past.

We don't offer any compensation because our group has no income. We offer all of our services free of charge to promote good project management. In return for your presentation, we are more than happy to have you promote yourself and the work you do. We are also open to giving one or two give-aways if you want to give away a product or book to promote your company.

About the Presenter

Rick A. Morris, PMP, OPM3 certified, an ITIL Practitioner, consultant, author, mentor, and creator of a non-profit foundation to promote Project Management in charities and other non-profits.

Rick is currently the Owner/President of R2 Consulting, LLC. Rick is an accomplished project manager and public speaker. His appetite for knowledge and passion for the profession makes him a sought after speaker at PMI chapters, various civic organizations, and a frequent guest lecturer at local universities.

He holds the PMP (Project Management Professional), MPM (Masters of Project Management), OPM3 (Organization Project Management Maturity Model), Six Sigma Green Belt, MCITP, MCTS, MCSE, TQM, ATM-S, ITIL, and ISO certifications. Rick has worked for organizations such as GE, Xerox, and CA and has consulted to numerous clients in a wide variety of industries including financial services, entertainment, construction, non-profit, hospitality, pharmaceutical, retail, and manufacturing. Rick has two books (“The Everything Project Management Book”, 2nd Edition published by Adams Media and “Project Management That Works!” published by AMACOM) that were released in 2008.

An active member of the Project Management Institute and currently the Past President of the Birmingham Chapter, Rick is no stranger to being center stage in front of large groups of people.

At the early age of 11, Rick was a Walt Disney World Performer in their seasonal shows. In high school, he worked at MGM Studios on various projects including the New Mickey Mouse Club.

Taking the experience of his youth and blending it with the knowledge he attained throughout his career, Rick has been able to inspire and mentor many project managers. His blend of real world experience and down to earth delivery style makes his passion for the profession contagious.:

Ron Hadley is Head Talent Management, Novartis Development in East Hanover, NJ and has broad HR experience in Talent Management, Leadership Development, Talent Acquisition, and Business Partnering. Prior positions include Executive Director of Talent Management at Wyeth and Head of US Staffing at BASF Corp.

Ron serves on the Board of Directions for Beyond the Wall, a non-profit serving the needs of the poor in the developing world. He has also provided leadership consulting for a variety of non-profits and taught at Caldwell College.

Jim De Piante got tricked into becoming a youth soccer coach. Though relatively inexperienced as a player, for 14 years he was extraordinarily successful as a youth soccer coach because of his ability to lead teams. Jim joined IBM as a software engineer after serving as a flight crewman in the US Navy and after graduating summa cum laude from the University of Florida in Computer Information Systems. He has led development projects in hardware, software, architecture, and eBusiness development, having done work for the IBM Product Divisions, IBM Global Services and ibm.com. He has recently returned to the US from an assignment in IBM Italy. He is presently managing the Jeopardy Challenge project for IBM Research. Jim is an internationally acclaimed project management practitioner, trainer and speaker. He is an Executive Project manager who holds IBM's highest PM certification, that of Executive Level Manager. PRESENTERS BIO:
David Anderson is an accomplished Project Management Professional with extensive experience providing IT services worldwide. He has worked in diverse business environments, including the Educational Testing Service, Interpool LTD, (a multi-national intermodal transportation company,) The Franklin Mint, C N A Insurance, Infomed (a home health care system provider), The City of Philadelphia, and The State of New Jersey.

While working at The Educational Testing Service, he directed the Y2k renovation of all legacy systems and provided maintenance services for software on a variety of platforms, using technical resources in five locations on three different continents. He also led the effort to engineer an automated documentation tool for legacy systems, selected software engineering tools for use in the Y2k effort, and built a database to support disability accommodations for the major ETS testing programs.

At Interpool, he served as a database administrator, Quality Assurance Manager, and finally, Director of Programming. He directed the development of software and hardware infrastructure that allowed Interpool, a multi-national company with limited resources, to use its data collection and verification processes as a competitive advantage in the very competitive market for container leasing.

Mr. Anderson has a BA in English from Rutgers New Brunswick, and an MBA from Rider University. He holds the PMP designation, as well as the MCP and CPCU designations. He lives with his wife Hope in Pennington, New Jersey. They have a daughter Caroline in graduate school and a son, David, who is a junior in college.

The PMP examination is now based on version 4 of the Guide to the Product Management Book of Knowledge (PMBoK). Some members accidentally removed from Linkedin group

I accidentally removed about 50 members yesterday from our linkedin.com group.

So, if you were removed from our linkedin.com group yesterday, it's nothing you did. It was an honest mistake I made.

The screen to add people who have requested to join the group is exactly the same as the screen to remove them. I thought I was on the screen to add people, but was on the screen to remove people. With one click of the button, I removed 50 people. There was no "are you sure?" and no "undo."

But using the "back" button on the browser I was able to see the people I deleted. But, I can only contact the people who are in my network. So, I emailed those of you I could (about 30 people). I can't contact the rest. I did however send the list to the help desk, we'll see what they say.

So, please request to join again and I'll approve you again. Thanks for your patience.

Rob Hochenberger has more than twenty years experience in a wide range of IT positions including project management, business analysis and software development. For the past five years Rob has been a project manager for a data warehouse/business intelligence initiative for Chubb Insurance.

Rob's experience spans the Insurance, Pharmaceutical and Telecom industries and includes project management experience in a broad variety of settings. Abstract of the presentation:

David Anderson is an accomplished Project Management Professional with extensive experience providing IT services worldwide. He has worked in diverse business environments, including the Educational Testing Service, Interpool LTD, (a multi-national intermodal transportation company,) The Franklin Mint, C N A Insurance, Infomed (a home health care system provider), The City of Philadelphia, and The State of New Jersey.

While working at The Educational Testing Service, he directed the Y2k renovation of all legacy systems and provided maintenance services for software on a variety of platforms, using technical resources in five locations on three different continents. He also led the effort to engineer an automated documentation tool for legacy systems, selected software engineering tools for use in the Y2k effort, and built a database to support disability accommodations for the major ETS testing programs.

At Interpool, he served as a database administrator, Quality Assurance Manager, and finally, Director of Programming. He directed the development of software and hardware infrastructure that allowed Interpool, a multi-national company with limited resources, to use its data collection and verification processes as a competitive advantage in the very competitive market for container leasing.

Mr. Anderson has a BA in English from Rutgers New Brunswick, and an MBA from Rider University. He holds the PMP designation, as well as the MCP and CPCU designations. He lives with his wife Hope in Pennington, New Jersey. They have a daughter Caroline in graduate school and a son, David, who is a junior in college

On Thursday night, David will share lessons learned while using off-site and off-shore resources for both maintenance and development projects, and the lessons learned developing applications for remote locations.
