Abby will deliver a presentation entitled ""Job Searching 2010 – How to Play and Beat the Odds"". In 2010, you can no longer find a job by applying to positions on Monster & CareerBuilder. There are far more candidates applying for the same positions, so you have to differentiate yourself. The days are gone when having a resume printed on special paper with a fancy font on it will get you noticed. In today's job market, you have to network your way into companies using face-to-face connections and social media. Abby will discuss a variety of networking methods and will also offer unique ways to get your resume in front of the hiring manager.

Some members accidentally removed from Linkedin group

I accidentally removed about 50 members yesterday from our linkedin.com group.

So, if you were removed from our linkedin.com group yesterday, it's nothing you did. It was an honest mistake I made.

The screen to add people who have requested to join the group is exactly the same as the screen to remove them. I thought I was on the screen to add people, but was on the screen to remove people. With one click of the button, I removed 50 people. There was no "are you sure?" and no "undo."

But using the "back" button on the browser I was able to see the people I deleted. But, I can only contact the people who are in my network. So, I emailed those of you I could (about 30 people). I can't contact the rest. I did however send the list to the help desk, we'll see what they say.

So, please request to join again and I'll approve you again. Thanks for your patience.

Abstract of the presentation:

David Anderson is an accomplished Project Management Professional with extensive experience providing IT services worldwide. He has worked in diverse business environments, including the Educational Testing Service, Interpool LTD, (a multi-national intermodal transportation company,) The Franklin Mint, C N A Insurance, Infomed (a home health care system provider), The City of Philadelphia, and The State of New Jersey.

While working at The Educational Testing Service, he directed the Y2k renovation of all legacy systems and provided maintenance services for software on a variety of platforms, using technical resources in five locations on three different continents. He also led the effort to engineer an automated documentation tool for legacy systems, selected software engineering tools for use in the Y2k effort, and built a database to support disability accommodations for the major ETS testing programs.

At Interpool, he served as a database administrator, Quality Assurance Manager, and finally, Director of Programming. He directed the development of software and hardware infrastructure that allowed Interpool, a multi-national company with limited resources, to use its data collection and verification processes as a competitive advantage in the very competitive market for container leasing.

Mr. Anderson has a BA in English from Rutgers New Brunswick, and an MBA from Rider University. He holds the PMP designation, as well as the MCP and CPCU designations. He lives with his wife Hope in Pennington, New Jersey. They have a daughter Caroline in graduate school and a son, David, who is a junior in college

On Thursday night, David will share lessons learned while using off-site and off-shore resources for both maintenance and development projects, and the lessons learned developing applications for remote locations.

The goal of this group is similar to the Monthly PMP Exam Study Prep group, to empower people studying for the PMI PMP Exam (Project Management Institute's Project Management Professional certification examination).

However it is designed to be more interactive and members are expected to be much more involved. Unlike the monthly call, the weekly calls are presented by various members of the group and are not recorded.

This group was started to allow each member to complete the study of all materials which may appear on the PMP Certification Exam in a much shorter timespan than it would take via the Monthly group.

But since PMLessons Learned is a volunteer run group, we are always looking for volunteers to help share in the workload each week. We are currently seeking:
1. Podcast editors - you just need a PC and to load some open source ("free") software we use. We give you full directions on how to do this.
2. Webmaster backup - a person to act as a backup webmaster for when people are on vacation
3. Speaker contact and scheduling - we could use someone to locate great speakers, contact them to speak, and keep the schedule updated.
4. Volunteer PMs for our "PMLL Volunteer Corps" – This is a new initiative to establish a group of PMs that would do volunteer work for non-profits. We are hoping to use this model to accomplish a few main goals: provide volunteer PM services to non-profits, provide opportunities PMs to give-back, Provide opportunities for new PMs to gain PM experience (and to be mentored), and provide opportunities for seasoned PMs to provide mentoring to new PMs. We need volunteers willing to commit an agreed (you decide) number of hours per week and an agreed (you decide) length of time toward one or more of the following:
a. Volunteers to initiate and coordinate the program
b. Experienced PMs willing to actively mentor new PMs
c. New PM’s willing to manage or co-manage the projects while being mentored by a seasoned PM
d. Experienced PMs desiring to manage a project with or without mentoring
e. Volunteers to find non-profits needing PM help and to define the projects

One of the aspects of networking that I learned to appreciate is the incredible knowledge of others and how willing they are to help if only asked. Most conference calls the conversation center around 2-3 individuals. When I review the call log I find 20 people who prefer to listen and learn. Tonight is an open forum to ask those on the call about their experiences with the job search. What is working and what has not. Talking to others that are sharing similar issues will stimulate the discovery of new questions, new possibilities and may guide you towards the next steps in your job search. It has helped me to resolve problems, plan next steps, and invigorate my thought process. Think of this as high powered brain storming. The sum of the many is greater then the one. It is questions that have the most power to open doors and your mind to fresh thinking, new possibilities, and innovative solutions.

PRESENTERS BIO:
Marilyn Ginsberg-Finner has worked in the telecommunications and defense industries, performing, managing, and consulting on process improvement, SQA, and other topics. She served on 6ó teams and led and contributed to successful CMMI appraisals. Marilyn is currently with Northrop Grumman, as a process consultant for US Army Software Engineering Center at Fort Monmouth. She is a Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE), Senior member American Society for Quality (ASQ), member NJ SPIN, IEEE-CS, and has served as Program Chair Jersey SIGAda, and a member of the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Executive Committee and the ISO US Technical Advisory Group.

Doug Smith has been the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Black Belt responsible for Quality Improvement at Northrop Grumman’s IT Sector. In addition to teaching Lean Six Sigma and leading LSS teams, he provides engineering and management expertise to projects and proposals. For more than half of his 28 years in software development and project management, Doug has used continuous improvement techniques and the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Models, with emphasis on metrics, statistical process control, estimation, project management, peer reviews, and model-based assessments. He has led organizations to CMMI Level 5 certification in three different SCAMPI assessments. Doug’s software development background is in service-oriented, object-oriented, and web-based systems, primarily in C, C++, and Java. His functional areas of expertise include document imaging, computer graphics, command and control systems, and military manpower management. Doug has presented at conferences and published in journals on metrics, process improvement, computer graphics, and software engineering, including the 2008 John Wiley/IEEE Computer Society Press book, Practical Support for Lean Six Sigma Software Process Definition, and was a subject matter expert for development of the IEEE Computer Society’s “Certified Software Development Associate” (CSDA) Learning System. Doug has taught at military and civilian schools and colleges, and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U S Marine Corps Reserve. Doug received a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He is ITIL v3 Foundation certified, and is a member of IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society.

The PMP examination is now based on version 4 of the Guide To the Product Management Book of Knowledge (PMBoK). This month’s PMP Study call focuses on the Project Scope Management knowledge area as laid out in Version 4. There are changes in this area. As an instructor, Tom has facilitated courses on such topics as Project Management, Supervisory and Sales Management. Tom has published several articles in PMI publications, websites and has released his new book, Boss Talk in the 21st Century, A Leadership Guide. Frank Saladis: Frank is President of Project Imaginers Inc., a PM consulting firm. He is an author and national speaker on the subject of project management (having spoken at numerous PMI events and chapters). He is the originator of the International Project Management Day and past president of the New York City chapter of PMI. Kevin Aguanno is known in the IT industry for his innovative approaches to solving common problems with a special emphasis on complex application development and systems integration projects. He focuses on two specialty areas: agile project management and troubled project recovery.

As a well-known keynote speaker, trainer, and coach in agile management methods, Aguanno has taught thousands of people how to better manage high-change projects by using Scrum, Extreme Programming, Feature-Driven Development, and other agile methods. He is a frequent presenter at conferences and private corporate events where he delights audiences with practical advice and fascinating stories from his own experiences in the trenches.

He has taught for several years at the University of Toronto where he won the coveted Excellence in Teaching Award, and is a regular guest lecturer in software engineering and project management classes at other universities.

Kevin Aguanno holds a B.A. from the University of Western Ontario and a Master’s in Project Management from the School of Business and Public Management at George Washington University.

He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), and his competency is certified by IBM as a Certified Executive Project Manager and by the International Project Management Association (IPMA) as a Senior Project Manager
(IPMA Level B).

Aguanno is an active member of the Project Management Institute (U.S.A.) including the Information Systems SIG, the American Society for the Advancement of Project Management (U.S.A.), the Association for Project Management (U.K.), and the Project Management Association of Canada where he is a founding director.

He is accredited by the IPMA (Geneva, Switzerland) as a project management competency assessor, and he performs IPMA Level-B and IPMA Level-C assessments for the ASAPM in the U.S.A.

About the Presenters:

Marilyn Ginsberg-Finner has worked in the telecommunications and defense industries, performing, managing, and consulting on process improvement, SQA, and other topics. She served on 6ó teams and led and contributed to successful CMMI appraisals. Marilyn is currently with Northrop Grumman, as a process consultant for US Army Software Engineering Center at Fort Monmouth. She is a Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE), Senior member American Society for Quality (ASQ), member NJ SPIN, IEEE-CS, and has served as Program Chair Jersey SIGAda, and a member of the IEEE Software Engineering Standards Executive Committee and the ISO US Technical Advisory Group.

Doug Smith has been the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Black Belt responsible for Quality Improvement at Northrop Grumman’s IT Sector. In addition to teaching Lean Six Sigma and leading LSS teams, he provides engineering and management expertise to projects and proposals. For more than half of his 28 years in software development and project management, Doug has used continuous improvement techniques and the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Models, with emphasis on metrics, statistical process control, estimation, project management, peer reviews, and model-based assessments. He has led organizations to CMMI Level 5 certification in three different SCAMPI assessments. Doug’s software development background is in service-oriented, object-oriented, and web-based systems, primarily in C, C++, and Java. His functional areas of expertise include document imaging, computer graphics, command and control systems, and military manpower management. Doug has presented at conferences and published in journals on metrics, process improvement, computer graphics, and software engineering, including the 2008 John Wiley/IEEE Computer Society Press book, Practical Support for Lean Six Sigma Software Process Definition, and was a subject matter expert for development of the IEEE Computer Society’s “Certified Software Development Associate” (CSDA) Learning System. Doug has taught at military and civilian schools and colleges, and is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U S Marine Corps Reserve. Doug received a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He is ITIL v3 Foundation certified, and is a member of IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society.
