NOTES FROM THE CALL:
Powerful teams are built on authenticity and the willingness to listen and be open. A major principle of powerful teams is that they must be a functioning with high integrity. This means that they are not settling for less than what they know they deserve in team relationships. Every person on the team asks for what they want and need from others. Each person speaking their truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. And they behave in ways that are in harmony with their personal values. All decisions and choices are made only after full and complete conversation, and they are made with the knowledge that the best decision has been made for moving forward.
You are craving this kind of teamwork! Working with the kind of team that works together to create a unified, creative group that moves forward “as if they are one entity, connected in trust, common purpose, and results”. Rarely do we find that type of culture, but I’m willing to take on the challenge to change that – how about you?
Here’s what you are going to learn on this revealing and sizzling hot call:
• Discover the one thing that creates the foundation for teams to create phenomenal results.
• The exact strategies necessary for Building Powerful Teams.
• How to make it easy and FUN to be a leader on any team in which you participate.
• The BIG secret to becoming “we” instead of “me”
• And much more…

NOTES FROM THE CALL:
The lotteries tell us ""you can't win if you don't play"" and the same holds true for project politics. You cannot succeed if you think you can avoid or ignore the politics. However, politics does not have to be negative. Politics, the process by which groups of people make collective decisions, ensures that a project has the best chance of success whether it is a traditional PMBOK-managed effort or an agile self-organizing team. We'll explore the game of politics and use the acronym STICK as a guideline to political success.

If you're studying for the PMP Exam, you may want to listen to the MP3s of past PMP Exam Study Group conference calls. They're located in our Archive (see the link on our website).

PRESENTATION:
The directions to obtain the presentation are at PMlessonsLearned.com - on the left hand side of the webpage follow the link titled ""Files and Presentations"" to see directions for obtaining the presentation.

NOTES FROM THE CALL:
This presentation will take you through a real story of building a PMO when projects are already running. In an ideal situation, it would be great to build a PMO "by the book." In an ideal world it would be best to start from scratch and follow the best practices to build a PMO on a solid foundation.

But, in the real world, situations are less than ideal. Perhaps, just like this story, you're building (or about to build) a PMO in an environment where everything is already running full steam ahead. It's like jumping on to a moving train! Things are already in motion. You've got to build a solid foundation while things are moving.

It's like taking control of a war that's already happening. The fighter jets are already scrambling, the tanks are already rolling, sirens are sounding, bullets are flying, and all of the generals have higher priorities in their own battles. What's a new commander to do?

This presentation will be helpful to people trying to raise the effectiveness of a PMO, people considering starting a PMO, and those desiring to better understand PMOs

NOTES FROM THE CALL:
Managing in the Face of Ever-Changing Requirements

1,000% over budget. 2 years late. We've all heard about projects where the original budget and schedule were exceeded by orders of magnitude. How could this happen given competent project management? Whether in government or private industry, project managers face a huge challenge when confronted with continually-changing requirements. How can you plan when the WBS keeps changing? Traditional project management approaches suggest that we take a snapshot of the requirements as a baseline, and then use change control in an attempt to minimize the impact of any shifting requirements. Sometimes, however, these changes are a reality that the project sponsor has to accommodate. The new Agile Project Management methods help deal with these situations.

Participants in this session will learn the founding principles and techniques of Agile Project Management with examples from real-world projects that used these methods to control changing requirements.

PRESENTERS BIO:
With over 20 years of managing complex systems integration and software development projects, Kevin Aguanno is known in the industry for his innovative approaches to solving common project management problems. He has taught for several years at the University of Toronto where he won the coveted SCS Excellence in Teaching Award, and is a regular guest lecturer in software engineering and project management classes at several other universities.

The directions to obtain the presentation are at PMlessonsLearned.com - on the left hand side of the webpage follow the link titled ""Files and Presentations"" to see directions for obtaining the presentation.

NOTES FROM THE CALL:
One of the most sought after topics for project managers is how to deal with failing projects or even how to turn them around. When industry figures show a variation of 60-82% of projects failing, it is easy to see why so many seek this information. In typical Rick Morris style, this session will not be full of theories or textbook options. Instead, it will be an introspective look into actual experiences and a telling of true lessons learned. Rick made a name for himself at Fortune 100 companies for his ability to quickly analyze, understand, and put plans in motion to turn around failing projects. Some of the stories will include:
• Dealing with difficult Sponsors
• Dealing with an unresponsive and unsupportive direct manager
• Turning around software development as well as IT Services projects
• Dealing with ethical/moral issues

Rick also discussed some of his personal failures in trying to bring a project back to life. As in every situation, there are times when a project will simply fail. Rick will discuss some of the difficult lessons that he learned in some of the most trying times of his career.
